WHY EQUALITY "CONSCIOUSNESS" MATTERS!

There comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness.... that time is now!”
Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai (1940-2011)

Tuko Sawa is a concept that reinforces the fact that all human beings are born equal and therefore we have a responsibility to see ourselves in others and treat them as we would like to be treated. Tuko Sawa is a practical tool for re-contextualising the human story by situating it within the Harmony Principles of Oneness, Interdependence, Diversity, and Adaptation. Everyone matters and every action counts.

The Tuko Sawa concept borrows heavily from Transcultural Studies and was adapted
for implementation in Tanzania to mobilise youth towards the common goal of protecting our shared home; planet Earth. Transculturalism is defined as "Seeing Yourself in Others," making it a very compassionate philosophy, which empowers humans to focus on our shared humanity and celebrate diversity despite the many perceived differences.

Judging from how humans have treated each other throughout history, it appears that
equality is one thing that we have failed to see in each other. Religious frameworks tell us that we are made in the image of our Creator and therefore we are equal, yet in the name of religions we have mistreated, maimed and killed each other. Similarly, proclamations have been made by nations and UN entities regarding human equality and the “brotherhood” we share, yet these have neither stopped wars nor have they made us care about our common values such as Humanity, Love and Unity.

Both frameworks failed to inculcate a cohesive sense of belonging. Infact, religions
introduced differentiating paradigms with each claiming that theirs, and theirs alone is
the true religion. Likewise, worldwide organisations like the UN have “pecking orders”
where not all countries have the same voice or worth. In other words, “equality is not
created equal.”

This is the dilemma we are facing now. We constructed human differences and now they have come back to bite us. Luckily, technology has “shrunk” the world by removing
communication boundaries and cultural spaces. Homogenous communities are slowly
being replaced with more multicultural/multilingual societies, therefore now more than
ever we need a common framework on how to treat each other. The tool we need now is
not another set of rules. Enforced political correctness  ends up breeding resentment and being abused by some.

Wangari Maathai words above suggest that it is now the right time to shift to a new level of consciousness and the Tuko Sawa concept has demonstrated that it is possible to increase consciousness and alert humanity of their shared values and the responsibility to care for each other and our shared home; The Earth.
